“Have you heard about First Evergreen’s humble beginnings?” I ask. First Evergreen Baptist Church has a rich history. It began with a split from old Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. This original church was constituted in 1809. It stood near Centenary Methodist Church.

Trouble brewed on February 14 1844. The congregation and pastor found themselves locked out. Brother Buckhalter did it. Most members were “Mission-minded”. They formed a new church. They called it Evergreen. They built this building in 1844.

First Evergreen Baptist Church became a place of refuge. During slavery days Negroes walked miles to attend services here. By 1864 Negro members outnumbered White members. There were 130 Negro members compared to 86 White members.

Let’s fast forward. In 1900 First Evergreen was organized again. This time it was on the corner of East Boundary and Wheaton Streets. Rev. C.L. Haynes and six faithful spirits united. They started this new chapter.

In 2014 First Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 114th anniversary. Pastor Ronald B. Gregory led the celebration. The theme was “Unity of the Spirit”. Celebrations occurred each Monday night in October. Many of Savannah’s ministers proclaimed God’s Word. Rev. Chester Ellis and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church led the final service.

First Evergreen Baptist Church stands at 622 East Bolton Street. The church continues to serve the community. It is a testament to faith. It is also a symbol of unity. It is a beacon of hope in Savannah. The church’s phone number is (912) 236-4130. It welcomes all. It is a place of worship. It is a place for community. It is a place for reflection. Take a moment to appreciate its enduring legacy.
