Can a church have two birthdays? The First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Austin can. This plaque commemorates its long and fascinating history. It all began in 1853. Missionary Reverend E.B. Crisman formally organized the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Austin. The first members gathered in a simple frame building at 7th and Lavaca streets. They worshipped there for decades. In 1892, they replaced the frame building with a beautiful stone structure. This marked a significant step forward for the growing congregation. But their journey was far from over. In 1906, a major dispute arose over a proposed church merger. This dispute escalated all the way to the Texas Supreme Court. The court’s decision forced the Cumberland Presbyterian members to relinquish their beloved stone building. They had to turn it over to the Presbyterian USA church. Imagine their heartbreak. But this resilient congregation refused to give up. Eight years later, thanks to the efforts of Elder R.M. Castleman, they were able to buy back their building. Their joy must have been immense. The congregation continued to grow. Around 1950, they built a new sanctuary. This sanctuary stands at the very spot where we are today, 6800 Woodrow Avenue. The First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Austin celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003. This plaque, erected in 2004, serves as a testament to their enduring faith and resilience. It also tells a story of a congregation that wouldn’t give up, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Their journey reminds us of the power of community, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of faith.
