In 1960s Chicago, whispers of change echoed through the streets. First Church of the Brethren, standing tall at Central Park and Congress Parkway, became a sanctuary for those whispers. It wasn’t just a place of worship; it was the very office of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Chicago campaign. First Church of the Brethren’s history in Chicago began much earlier, in 1885, on South State Street. The congregation later moved to Hastings Street in 1892. Their current home, formerly a Presbyterian church, was dedicated in January 1925, thanks to a generous gift from Mrs. Fahrney. The church’s location placed it at the heart of a vibrant Brethren community. Nearby were Bethany Seminary and Bethany Hospital, creating a bustling hub of activity on Sunday mornings. First Church of the Brethren wasn’t just a building; it was a catalyst for growth. It fostered the development of other ministry groups, including a Chinese congregation from 1908 to the 1960s and a Spanish-language group in the 1950s. The church’s commitment to social justice extended beyond its walls. They provided temporary housing for Japanese Americans released from internment camps during World War II. Decades later, in the mid-1970s, disaster struck. A boiler burnout led to frozen pipes and a collapsed ceiling, forcing the congregation to relocate next door to the youth ministry house. Despite dwindling numbers, they returned to their sanctuary after minor renovations, using a Sunday school room for services. A major renovation in 1989 brought the congregation back to the main sanctuary after thirteen years. First Church of the Brethren has continually adapted to the changing needs of the community. It has partnered with other organizations such as the Chicago Community Mennonite Church and Roca de Esperanza Mennonite Church. The church also housed programs like The DOOR and Radical Journey, providing cross-cultural experiences for youth and young adults. First Church of the Brethren’s legacy continues. Its commitment to peace and justice is unwavering, evident in their recent pledge to the Apartheid Free Communities network. Even today, choirs sing, community groups gather, and the spirit of service thrives within its historic walls.
