In 1894, a beacon of faith ignited in Dallas. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, began its journey. Christian Scientists first gathered, their shared belief drawing them together. They met in various downtown locations, a testament to their growing community. The First Church of Christ, Scientist congregation yearned for a permanent home. In 1910, they sold their wood-frame building on South Ervay Street. This sale paved the way for a grand new edifice at the corner of Browder and Cadiz. The renowned firm of Hubbell and Greene designed the neo-Classical Revival style church. These architects also designed the majestic Scottish Rite Temple on Harwood Street. The design echoed the mother church in Boston. It featured an impressive dome and Adamesque interior. The cornerstone was laid on August 27, 1910. The First Church of Christ, Scientist opened its doors on January 14, 1912. The 900-seat sanctuary welcomed worshippers for decades. The church served as a spiritual haven into the 1980s. Sadly, the surrounding area declined. Members gradually dispersed to other Christian Science congregations. The building’s story took a new turn in 1999. A new owner purchased the then-dilapidated structure. A thoughtful renovation breathed life back into the church. The project included a new roof and restoration of the metal dome. The exterior masonry was repaired, and the interior was lovingly restored. The building reopened in 2000. It began its new chapter as a performing arts center. The First Church of Christ, Scientist building faced an uncertain future. The surrounding area was slated for redevelopment. This redevelopment threatened the historic structure. However, a new chapter unfolded. The building was sold to another church. The First Church of Christ, Scientist building is once again a place of worship. Its journey reflects the enduring spirit of faith and community.
