A Neoclassical masterpiece stands before you. This is the former First Church of Christ Scientist. It’s a story of architectural ambition and religious change.

Designed by Solon Spencer Beman a renowned Chicago architect the church opened in 1897. Beman was a Christian Scientist himself. He believed the classical style reflected the faith’s calm power and dignity. The building was the first Christian Science church in this style. It influenced many others across the country.

The church’s design was intentional. The auditorium-like seating lacked obstructing columns. This ensured clear views and acoustics crucial for the readings central to Christian Science services. Even the most distant seat was only sixty-five feet from the reading desk.

The exterior too was unique for its time. It lacked the soaring towers and stained glass common in churches then. Instead Beman chose a simple edifice. He drew inspiration from the Erechtheion of the Acropolis. Ionic columns stood stately against the Chicago sky.

The church wasn’t merely a beautiful building. It was a vibrant hub of religious activity. In 1923 an Aeolian-Skinner organ was installed. The instrument filled the space with magnificent sounds. It enhanced the already impressive acoustics.

However times changed. The neighborhood shifted. The Christian Science Church experienced a decline. In 1950 Grant Memorial AME Church purchased the building. First Church of Christ Scientist ceased to exist in that location.

Yet the building’s legacy lives on. It stands as a testament to Beman’s architectural vision. It represents a chapter in Chicago’s history. It shows the enduring beauty of Neoclassical design. Today it continues to serve as a place of worship. This time under the stewardship of the Grant Memorial AME Church. The building continues to be a pillar in the community offering both spiritual and community-based services. It is a true testament to the enduring power of faith.
