The First Baptist Church of Marquette Manor didn’t begin in the peaceful suburbs. Its roots lie in the heart of Chicago, planted in 1919 as an offshoot of Bethany Baptist Church. From humble beginnings in the McDonald family home, their faith blossomed. They outgrew a portable schoolhouse and even a clubhouse. Finally, under the guidance of Reverend F. C. Schaffer, they built their first sanctuary. Imagine their joy as 150 souls, hearts brimming with hope, walked from that clubhouse to their new home.
The Great Depression may have wiped out their savings, but it couldn’t extinguish their spirit. Pastor Odegard, through fervent tent revivals held right here on the church grounds, reignited their hope. They rebuilt, expanded, and even planted a new church in Lockport, their faith echoing outwards. The First Baptist Church of Marquette Manor even played a pivotal role in the formation of Baptist World Mission in 1961.
The church moved to Downers Grove in 1970, a testament to their growth and vision. Yet, tragedy struck. In 1976, fire ravaged their original city church. Undeterred, they chose to focus on their suburban home, a symbol of new beginnings.
