How long has this church been standing here? Looking at the First Baptist Church of De Soto, you might think it’s a fairly modern building. But don’t let appearances deceive you. The First Baptist Church of De Soto has a rich history dating back to 1889. Imagine that, a time when De Soto was just a small village! The church has witnessed the town’s transformation into the thriving community it is today.
The story of the First Baptist Church of De Soto is intertwined with another church – the Salem Church. This building was moved to De Soto and became the Union Church, a shared space for Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, and the Church of Christ. Each denomination took turns holding their services once a month. Eventually, the other denominations moved on, leaving the Baptists as the sole occupants.
In 1922, a new chapter began. Annabelle Parks, a descendant of De Soto’s first settler, generously donated land for a new church building. Using some of the old timbers from the Union Church, the congregation built the First Baptist Church of De Soto that you see today. That’s right, parts of this very structure have been a part of De Soto’s religious life for well over a century. It’s a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of De Soto’s residents. The church has seen its fair share of challenges over the years, from severe storms to droughts. But through it all, the First Baptist Church of De Soto has remained a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of faith.
