In 1849, a small group of settlers gathered in the Long Creek Community, northeast of what is now Mesquite. They laid the foundation for what would become First Baptist Church Mesquite. These pioneers, led by Samuel and Nancy Coats, established Bethany Baptist Church. This church disbanded in 1871. But its spirit lived on in the homes of the remaining members, eventually leading to the formal establishment of First Baptist Church Mesquite. The church acquired its first building in 1877, a simple 40 by 80-foot structure near the railroad. The land was purchased from W.H. Thomas for one dollar and “God’s blessings on the church.” Services were held once a month, often led by Brother L.S. Darling, a prominent figure who later served as Mesquite’s mayor. The church grew, adding a Sunday School in 1896 and holding its first recorded Wednesday night service in 1915. A new building replaced the original structure in 1914, followed by a wing and basement in 1927. First Baptist Church Mesquite continued to expand, embracing change and adapting to the needs of its growing congregation. In 1935, the church affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. They even acquired two Civilian Conservation Corps buildings in 1941. The church’s first recorded annual budget, a modest $2,600, reflects the simpler times of 1939. First Baptist Church Mesquite dedicated its current sanctuary in 1960, a testament to its enduring presence in the community. Further expansions included a children’s building in 1961 and the west wing with educational and office spaces in 1978. Even in the 21st century, First Baptist Church Mesquite continued to invest in its facilities, undertaking a $1.5 million renovation in 2002. This included the addition of a bus barn. From its humble beginnings in a settler’s home, First Baptist Church Mesquite has blossomed into a cornerstone of the community. It stands as a testament to the faith and dedication of those who came before.
