Deep within Kassel’s Harleshausen lies a unique geological wonder. It is the Firnskuppe, a 313.9-meter-high rocky peak. Today, we will explore its fascinating past.

The Firnskuppe is not just any hill. It is a relic of a volcano from about 10 million years ago. This geological formation makes it an offshoot of the Hoher Habichtswald.

As you stand here, imagine the landscape dramatically different. Picture a volcanic landscape. That was once the Firnskuppe’s reality.

Let us turn back time to before Christ. Humans were already drawn to the Firnskuppe area. Proof of this is from the La-Tène period. You can see the remains of burial mounds southeast of the Firnskuppe. These ancient graves are near the Harleshausen swimming pool.

During the Middle Ages, this elevated spot became a haven. Robber gangs sought refuge here. Its natural defenses offered them cover.

Now focus your attention toward the summit. Did you notice the old mining shaft? This is no ordinary hole. Locals call it the Sagenschacht. Miners once searched for ore, coal, and minerals deep within the Firnskuppe.

Look closely. Can you see the date 18th January 1643? It is said it was once visible above the shaft. An iron gate now secures the entrance for safety.

This shaft is more than just a mining relic. According to local mythology, the Sagenschacht is a gateway. It is a path to the underworld to be avoided. One legend tells of a shepherd and his entire flock. They fell into the shaft and disappeared forever.

Another tale speaks of a jealous stable boy. He killed a grenadier and tossed him into the dark abyss. These stories add to the Firnskuppe’s mysterious allure.

In 1821, tragedy struck. A shepherd named Bernhard Krebs fell into the shaft. Despite being rescued, he died soon after. His story serves as a reminder of the dangers hidden within the Firnskuppe.

Today, a secure grid covers the opening. It prevents accidental falls into the depths below.

If you visit during the colder months, you might get a treat. Glimpses of the Hercules statue are visible through the bare trees. The statue is in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe.

To reach this point, one can follow trails from the Wandererparkplatz Firnskuppe. This spot is located near the junction of Bundesstraße 251 and Landesstraße 3217.

The Firnskuppe is a place where nature and history intertwine. It offers a glimpse into both geological history and local folklore. As you leave, remember the stories. Remember the people who once walked this ancient ground. The Firnskuppe is more than just a hill. It is a repository of tales waiting to be told.
