Why is Firmin Bouisset remembered today? He was a painter, poster artist, and printmaker. Now, let’s delve into the story of Firmin Bouisset.

Firmin Bouisset was born in Moissac in 1859. He died in Paris in 1925. Bouisset’s artistic journey began at the École des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse. He then joined Alexandre Cabanel’s class in Paris.

Firmin Bouisset debuted at the Salon des artistes français in 1880. He displayed two painted portraits. In 1883, he created designs for Sarreguemines earthenware. These designs gained attention.

Firmin Bouisset began his career creating chromos. These were images for good children. He illustrated many children’s books. These achieved great success.

Firmin Bouisset became known for his posters. The “Petite Menier” and “Petit Écolier de LU” are iconic. They remain part of French advertising and culture. Bouisset was known as the painter of childhood. He often used his children as models. Yvonne, his daughter, was used for Chocolat Menier. Jacques, his son, was used for the Petit Écolier de LU.

Beyond advertising, Bouisset continued painting and engraving. Before World War I, he tried to open a museum of engraving in Moissac. It would have showcased rare plates by leading artists. However, it received little support and was short-lived.

Firmin Bouisset was part of the jury for engraving and decorative arts. He became an Officer of Public Instruction in 1897. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1903.

Firmin Bouisset’s son married Abel Mignon’s daughter in 1913. She was the painter and engraver Yvonne Bouisset-Mignon.

An Espace Firmin Bouisset exists in Castelsarrasin. It’s located in the Maison d’Espagne. This space preserves many of his graphic works and advertisements.

In 2014, “La Pub, un jeu d’enfants” was published. It is a book about Firmin Bouisset’s life and work by Annie-Claude Elkaïm.

Jean Coladon created a painted wall in Moissac as a tribute. It was in the Firmin Bouisset garden. The wall is now damaged.

Firmin Bouisset created enduring images. For Lefèvre-Utile, he used the LU initials. This became part of the “Petit Écolier” poster in 1897. A version is still used today.

In 1892, Chocolat Menier contracted Firmin Bouisset. He used his daughter Yvonne as a model. She was depicted writing the company’s name with chocolate. This became an iconic image. It appeared on advertisements and products. It also featured on promotional items.
