Grounded in Cedar Park Texas Firefly Aerospace is making giant leaps. Founded in March 2017, Firefly Aerospace emerged from the assets of Firefly Space Systems. Tom Markusic founded the original company in 2014. The company’s mission is bold. Firefly aims to increase access to space. This echoes the ambition of other private spaceflight companies.
In its early days, Firefly Space Systems showed rapid growth. By November 2014, it had 43 employees. The company acquired 215 acres for an engine test and manufacturing facility in Briggs Texas. This is 50 miles north of Austin. Firefly also purchased equipment for manufacturing composite cryotanks. Prototypes were tested at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
However, Firefly Space Systems faced challenges. A lawsuit filed by Virgin Galactic alleged intellectual property theft. A major European investor withdrew support. Firefly furloughed its staff and ceased engineering work by December 2016.
But from the ashes Firefly Aerospace rose. Noosphere Ventures acquired the assets and revitalized the company. Max Polyakov, owner of Noosphere Ventures, committed to funding Firefly through its first two launches. The new management significantly altered engine development. They revised the Alpha vehicle design.
Firefly Aerospace expanded its operations. In May 2018, a Research and Development center opened in Dnipro Ukraine. This center was equipped with Ukraine’s largest 3D printer. It was intended for manufacturing high-quality metal parts.
Firefly Aerospace formed strategic partnerships. In October 2018, they partnered with York Space Systems. This partnership offered customers combined satellite and launch services. NASA selected Firefly Aerospace as one of nine companies to bid for Commercial Lunar Payload Services CLPS. Firefly proposed a robotic lunar lander called Firefly Genesis.
In February 2019, Firefly announced plans for manufacturing facilities and a launch site at Cape Canaveral. They leased a private launch pad, the former Space Launch Complex 20 SLC-20.
Despite its progress, Firefly faced legal challenges. In December 2019, shareholders of Firefly Space Systems filed a lawsuit alleging fraud by Tom Markusic. The lawsuit is still pending.
NASA awarded Firefly Aerospace approximately $93.3 million in February 2021. This was to develop exploration technologies for Artemis Commercial Moon Delivery in 2023. Firefly completed its $75 million Series A investment round in May 2021.
Firefly’s first test flight occurred on September 3, 2021. The Firefly Alpha rocket experienced an anomaly during ascent. The Range terminated the flight.
In late November 2021, Maxim Polyakov was asked to sell his stake in Firefly for national security reasons. Polyakov complied, and AE Industrial Partners acquired Noosphere’s stake in February 2022.
Northrop Grumman contracted Firefly Aerospace in August 2022. Firefly would build the Antares rocket’s new 300-series first stage.
On October 1, 2022, Firefly launched the Alpha rocket on its second test flight. Alpha completed all objectives. On September 14, 2023, Firefly successfully launched the Alpha rocket for the United States Department of Defense.
In 2024, Firefly competed for small satellite launch contracts with the United States Department of Defense. Jason Kim became the new CEO in August 2024.
Firefly’s launch vehicles include Firefly Alpha and MLV. The Alpha vehicle can lift 1,030 kg to low Earth orbit. Firefly’s advertised launch price is $15 million. The MLV is scheduled for its first launch in the second half of 2026.
Firefly is also developing lunar landers like Blue Ghost. Blue Ghost is designed to meet NASA requirements for CLPS.
Firefly designs rocket engines. These include Reaver, Lightning and Miranda. Firefly is the only organization to develop an orbital-class rocket engine utilizing the combustion tap-off cycle.
The company headquarters and factory are in Cedar Park Texas. Firefly uses leased launch sites in California and Florida. Firefly Aerospace aims to unlock space for humanity.
