In 1909, the Dallas Art Association gifted their collection to the City of Dallas. This marked the birth of the Dallas Free Public Art Gallery, housed within the Fine Arts Building in Fair Park. The Fine Arts Building, also known as the Textile and Fine Arts Building, became the first permanent home for the burgeoning art scene in Dallas. The gallery’s doors opened to the public, offering free admission on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For two decades, the Fine Arts Building showcased the city’s growing art collection. The Dallas Art Association, the precursor to what is now the Dallas Museum of Art, nurtured the city’s artistic spirit within these walls. In 1929, the collection outgrew the Fine Arts Building and relocated to the Majestic Theatre Building. However, the legacy of the Fine Arts Building remains, marking a significant chapter in the history of the Dallas Museum of Art.
