Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the spirit of rugby at Finchley Rugby Football Club! Right here in the heart of north London, this club has been a cornerstone of the community since its official founding in 1925. Though some records suggest a Finchley Rugby Club dating back to 1875, those records are a bit like a loose scrum – hard to pin down! The club’s first match in its current form was against Barnet Grammar School on December 26th, 1925. Finchley emerged victorious, winning 18 points to 6. This victory marked the beginning of an annual tradition, with Finchley facing off against Barnet Rugby Club for the coveted Brown Bowler trophy until 1996. Originally, the club sported sky blue and thin black hoops. However, in 1930, they transitioned to scarlet and grey hoops, ultimately landing on their current scarlet and white in 1947. These colours have witnessed decades of thrilling matches and fostered a legacy of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Finchley Rugby Football Club is more than just a sports club; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of rugby and a vibrant part of London’s sporting history.
