Consider this: a warm summer evening descends upon Dresden. Here at the Filmnächte am Elbufer, anticipation buzzes in the air. Since 1991, this spot has transformed into Germany’s largest open-air cinema festival. It draws over 200000 viewers each summer.
Imagine sitting on the Elbe meadows. You are directly opposite Dresden’s historic old town. The silhouette of the city provides a breathtaking backdrop as darkness falls. Around 3600 visitors gather each day. They watch current and historical films.
The Filmnächte am Elbufer is more than just movies. It’s a stage for renowned artists. The Toten Hosen, Snoop Dogg and Bob Dylan have all performed here. Since 2003, Kaisermania has been a highlight. These are the largest open-air concerts by Roland Kaiser. In fact a 2011 performance was released as a live DVD. Picture up to 12000 people standing before the stage at these concerts.
Now a story from the past. In August 2002, disaster struck. The Elbe River flooded the Filmnächte area. It destroyed much of the equipment. The stage was submerged. Yet after repairs the program restarted later that month. The next year, the Filmnächte became a benefit event. It helped flood victims. Since then, the area is cleared quickly when flood warnings occur.
Consider the massive screen. Since 2004, the Filmnächte has used the world’s largest mobile cinema screen. Its projection area is 448 square meters. During the day it can be retracted. This reduces wind resistance and visual impact. The screen rotates 90 degrees. Then it serves as a stage roof for concerts. Since 2018 a smaller LED screen has been used. It measures 23 square meters. It is mainly used for afternoon showings.
The PAN Veranstaltungslogistik und Kulturgastronomie GmbH organizes the event. Their contract initially ran until 2015. But it has been extended until 2025.
Think of the crowds. In 2013, over 202000 people attended the Filmnächte. The band Die Ärzte drew 36000 visitors alone. In 2022, a new record was set. Over 273000 guests attended. “Monsieur Claude und sein großes Fest” was a popular film.
Consider the challenges. In 2020, strict Corona rules were in place. Only 972 places were available. Despite this, 67500 visitors attended. The city extended the season by seven days.
The Filmnächte am Elbufer continues to evolve. It combines film, music and community. It creates unforgettable summer memories. As the credits roll on tonight’s film remember you have experienced a unique Dresden tradition.
