Gazing upon Fevziye Küçük Efendi Cami, one might initially overlook its intimate charm. This mosque isn’t about grandeur. It’s about a rich history woven into the fabric of Istanbul. Fevziye Küçük Efendi Cami sits modestly in the Sumbül Efendi neighborhood of Istanbul’s Fatih district, along Hacı Evhaddin Caddesi. It’s more than just a mosque. It’s a piece of a külliye, a complex that historically included a çeşme (fountain) and a çilehane (a retreat for Sufi spiritual practices). The story begins in 1814 when the structure was first built as a small mescit (prayer room). Years later, in 1825, Raşit Efendi renovated it. This explains why some locals still refer to it as Hacı Raşit Efendi Camii. But the real story lies with its original founder, Nakşibendi Şeyhi Feyzullah Şükrü Efendi, a preacher at the magnificent Hagia Sophia. He envisioned this space as a cami-tekke, a combined mosque and Sufi lodge. His son, Mehmet Abdürreşid Efendi, known as Küçük Efendi, continued his father’s legacy. In 1825, he reconstructed the cami-tekke and even added two kütüphane (library) buildings. This act cemented the name Fevziye Küçük Efendi Cami, honoring both the founder’s lineage and the son’s contribution. Look closely at the mosque. Its oval shape whispers of a departure from traditional mosque architecture. It speaks to the influence of Turkish Baroque style. Inside, imagine the original wooden dome and wooden interior, sadly damaged in a fire in 1957 but later repaired. Picture the unique minaret, a testament to its historical significance. The mosque’s courtyard, a spacious area with numerous graves in its hazire (graveyard), invites contemplation. Fevziye Küçük Efendi Cami holds a unique place in Istanbul’s historical tapestry. It’s a place where the spiritual and architectural intertwine, a place where whispers of the past echo in the present.
