Was this mosque always a mosque? The Fethi Çelebi Camii stands before us a testament to Istanbul’s enduring spirit. It’s not just a place of worship. It’s a story etched in stone. A story of construction and destruction resurrection and renewal.

Fethi Çelebi Camii in Istanbul’s Eyüp district holds a special place in the city’s history. It began as a humble mescit a small prayer house. Built by Fethullah Efendi one of Fatih’s Otakçılar. These were soldiers who served the sultan in battle and in other duties. The exact construction date is lost to time. However its humble beginnings are clear.

Tragedy struck. The mescit was destroyed. It fell into ruin. Hope emerged in 1683. Gazanfer Ağa a prominent figure from Saraçhane revived the mescit. He dedicated himself to its restoration. Gazanfer Ağa even added a sebil a public water fountain. This thoughtful addition provided a vital service to the community.

The transformation to a full-fledged cami a mosque came later thanks to Grand Vizier Bayram Pasha. His contribution elevated the Fethi Çelebi’s status. He cemented its place as a significant landmark in Eyüp.
