Allied bombing raids struck Leipzig repeatedly during World War II. The first raid occurred in 1943. The U.S. 2nd Infantry Division captured the city in 1945. The United States turned the city over to the Red Army in July 1945.
Leipzig became part of East Germany after World War II. The Monday demonstrations started in 1989. These demonstrations were important for the fall of communism.
