“To draw closer to Allah,” the words resonate above the entrance. The Ferruh Kethuda Cami stands before us. It is a testament to faith and Ottoman artistry. This mosque whispers tales of a bygone era.

The Ferruh Kethuda Cami is more than just a religious structure. It’s a cultural landmark nestled in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district. Built in 1562-63, the mosque owes its existence to Ferruh Agha. He was the steward of Semiz Ali Pasha, a grand vizier during Sultan Suleiman’s reign.

Imagine Ferruh Agha commissioning the renowned architect Mimar Sinan. Sinan designed this beautiful mosque. The Ferruh Kethuda Cami even served as a monastery for the Sünbüliye branch of the Halvetiye sect. This is why it’s also known as Balat Tekkesi. Only the mosque and a fountain remain today.

Note the unique architectural design of Ferruh Kethuda Cami. The mosque features a rectangular plan. A wooden final congregational section extends to the north. It includes a harem. This inverted T-plan reflects Sinan’s influence. It showcases early Ottoman architectural styles.

Look closely at the mihrab or altar niche. It is adorned with rare china. The china was crafted at the Tekfur Palace factory. This highlights a period when the Tekfur Palace workshop was rarely used.

The Ferruh Kethuda Cami has faced challenges. Fires in the late 19th century damaged the courthouse. They also damaged the wooden last congregational section. By the 1940s only fragments of the walls remained. The minaret miraculously stood tall.

The community rallied to save the Ferruh Kethuda Cami. Restoration began in the 1950s. It was spearheaded by the Ferruh Kethuda Mosque Restoration and Protection Association. The General Directorate of Foundations provided support. The restoration was completed in 1960.

In 2016 a comprehensive restoration project began. The Istanbul 1st Regional Directorate oversaw it. The work was completed in 2021. This ensured the Ferruh Kethuda Cami would endure for generations.

Consider the surrounding area. Balat’s historic streets beckon with their colorful charm. The Lantern Greek Orthodox Patriarchate stands nearby. Explore the Church of the Moon Yorgi. Visit the Chora Museum. Wander along the Golden Horn. Balat offers a glimpse into Istanbul’s rich tapestry.

Before leaving the Ferruh Kethuda Cami, take a moment. Reflect on its history. Appreciate its architecture. Remember Ferruh Agha’s vision. Let the spirit of this sacred space linger in your thoughts. The Ferruh Kethuda Cami stands as a symbol of faith. It is a testament to the enduring power of community. It represents the beauty of Ottoman design.
