Curious about the past? The Fernsprechamt Hansa whispers tales of Bremen’s early telephone age. This grand building stands as a testament to a time when communication transformed.

Let’s step back to the early 20th century. Bremen’s telephone network was exploding. The first telephone building on Neuenstraße built between 1901 and 1904 quickly became too small. A new, larger facility was needed. The Reichspostverwaltung began construction on this site in 1915. This was to be the Fernsprech-Dienstgebäude der Kaiserlichen Ober-Postdirektion.

However, World War I intervened. Construction dragged on and the Fernsprechamt Hansa was not completed until 1922. The building you see before you is the result. It was designed by architect Postbaurat Schäffer and Regierungsbaumeister B. Lühring.

Notice the architecture. The four-story plastered building features a striking hipped roof. Also note the two-story adjoining building. The Landesdenkmalpflegeamt calls the Fernsprechamt Hansa a locally important document of Bremen’s early telephone history.

Take a closer look at the facade. See the building sculptures depicting telephone-using cherubs? These playful figures hint at the building’s purpose. The Vermittlungsstellen occupied more than one and a half floors in the main building on the second floor. You can see this in the design of the facade.

The building was a significant undertaking. Its representative design reflected the importance of the new communication technology. The Fernsprechamt Hansa is one of the outstanding administrative buildings of its time. The building shows a good contemporary design. It broke away from historicism.

In 2006, the Fernsprechamt Hansa earned recognition as a protected Bremen cultural monument. Today, the building serves new purposes. After renovations, the Klinikum Bremen-Mitte uses it for various facilities. These include the Sozialpädiatrisches Institut – Kinderzentrum Bremen, the Gerichtsmedizin Bremen, the Institut für Chinesische Medizin and the Zentrum für Moderne Diagnostik Bremen.

The Fernsprechamt Hansa has adapted to the times. However, its historical significance remains. It stands as a reminder of Bremen’s communication history. It also reminds us how technology has shaped our world. So, as you move on, remember the stories echoing within these walls. Think of the voices that once traveled through the wires. This building connects us to Bremen’s past.
