Why is this lake called Feringasee? Standing here, on the shores of this man-made lake in northern Munich, you might be surprised to learn that its name dates back centuries. The Feringasee, you see, gets its name from an 8th-century document, a decree by Duke Tassilo III. The Latin phrase “Quidquid ad Feringas pertinebat” meaning “whatever belonged to Feringas” referred to the region, which later gave Oberföhring and Unterföhring their names. But the lake itself is much younger. Created between 1974 and 1976, the Feringasee was born from the earth excavated during the construction of the nearby A99 Autobahn. Don’t let its artificial origins fool you, though. This 32-hectare expanse of sparkling water, reaching depths of up to seven meters, has become a haven for Munich’s residents and visitors alike. The Feringasee offers a little something for everyone. Sunbathers stretch out on its sandy shores, children splash in its cool waters, and athletes test their skills in beach volleyball, windsurfing, and even fishing. There’s even a dedicated area for those who prefer to bask in the nude. Fed by groundwater sources, the Feringasee boasts excellent water quality, carefully monitored by the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety. So take a deep breath of fresh air, soak in the sunshine, and enjoy the unique blend of history and modernity that make the Feringasee such a special place.
