Amidst the urban tapestry of Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood stands Fenger High School. It’s a place where history whispers through the hallways. Fenger High School isn’t just a building. The Chicago Board of Education renamed the school in 1915. They chose to honor Christian Fenger, a distinguished Danish surgeon. The school’s principal, Elizabeth Dozier, was also featured. Fenger High School boasts a rich athletic history. The boys’ baseball team clinched an Illinois state title in 1945-46. They were also public league champions four times. The football team secured Chicago prep bowls titles four times. The boys’ golf team were public league champions twice. More recently, the girls’ basketball team celebrated a regional championship in 2012-13. Fenger’s alumni have made their mark in diverse fields. From Eliot Ness, the famed prohibition agent, to Robert Zemeckis, the Academy Award-winning director of *Forrest Gump*, Fenger High School has nurtured individuals who shaped history and entertained millions. Athletes like Andre Brown (NFL wide receiver) and Montell Griffin (boxer) also walked these halls. Fenger High School, rated 1 out of 10 by GreatSchools.org, faces its challenges. But it continues to serve its community, providing education and opportunities to generations of students in Roseland.
