Gazing upon Feneryolu Mahallesi, one might sense the echoes of a bygone era. Feneryolu Mahallesi is a captivating neighborhood nestled in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul. Its story intertwines with the rise of the city, whispering tales of wooden cottages and bustling train lines. Feneryolu Mahallesi emerged in the late 19th century. The completion of the Haydarpaşa-İzmit railway in 1870 spurred suburban development along the coast. Feneryolu became a favored spot, dotted with charming wooden houses amidst lush gardens. Originally, these homes served as summer retreats for Istanbul’s residents. Over time, as the city grew and building regulations changed, wooden structures gave way to concrete and reinforced concrete. The once quaint cottages transformed into apartment buildings, typically four stories high. This shift marked a significant transition in Feneryolu Mahallesi’s character. The neighborhood’s story also features a now-defunct railway line. Opened in September 1872, the line began at Feneryolu train station, curved through Sabit Pazar, crossed Bağdat Caddesi, and skirted the walls of Fuat Paşa’s grand garden. It eventually reached Fenerbahçe, winding its way through picturesque gardens and cottages. During World War I, this railway played a crucial role in military transport. Even after its primary function ceased, it was occasionally used for military purposes, such as transporting ammunition to Fenerbahçe in 1934. Finally, in March 1970, after nearly a century of service, the tracks were removed, and the elevated embankment was leveled to match the street. Today, Feneryolu Mahallesi offers a blend of old and new. While many of the original wooden houses are gone, the neighborhood retains a tranquil atmosphere. Its streets are now largely populated by students and retirees, adding to its unique charm. Feneryolu Mahallesi stands as a testament to Istanbul’s evolving urban landscape, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich past.
