Dedicated to the thunder of artillery, the Feldartilleriedenkmal stands as a solemn reminder of a bygone era. Here, at the edge of Karlsruhe’s Schlosspark, near the Willy-Brandt-Allee, we encounter a monument to sacrifice. The Feldartilleriedenkmal honors the fallen soldiers of two Karlsruhe artillery regiments. These were the Feld-Artillerie-Regiment ‘Großherzog’ (1. Badisches) Nr. 14 and the 3. Badisches Feld-Artillerie-Regiment Nr. 50. Created between 1923 and 1924 by Hermann Billing, the Feldartilleriedenkmal captures the gravity of the First World War. The inscription on the monument reads: “ZU EHREN DER IM WELTKRIEG 1914/18 FÜR IHR VATERLAND GEFALLENEN KAMERADEN DES FELDART. REGTS. GROSSHERZOG-1.BAD. No 14. DES 3.BAD. FELD- ART. REGTS. No 50 U. DEREN KRIEGSFORMATIONEN.” This translates to: “In honor of the comrades of the Field Artillery Regiment Grand Duke 1st Baden No. 14, the 3rd Baden Field Artillery Regiment No. 50 and their wartime formations who fell for their fatherland in the World War 1914/18.” The Feldartilleriedenkmal serves not just as a memorial, but as a historical marker. It connects us to the men who served in these specific regiments. It reminds us of the devastating impact of the war on the local community here in Karlsruhe.
