Over 470,000 ochre-colored sandstone blocks, shipped all the way from Western Australia, pave the ground beneath our feet here at Federation Square. Each block tells a silent tale of the Australian outback. Federation Square is much more than just a plaza. It’s a living tapestry of Melbourne’s vibrant culture and rich history.

Opened in 2002 to celebrate a century of Australian federation, the square quickly became a central hub. This is where Melburnians gather for everything from watching the AFL Grand Final on the big screen to attending vibrant cultural festivals. Did you know that the square we stand on now once housed railway yards and even a city morgue? Today, it’s a far cry from those industrial beginnings, transformed into a contemporary landmark.

Look around at the fascinating architecture – a blend of deconstructivist style and innovative design. Notice the geometric patterns, the use of zinc, sandstone, and glass? It’s far from traditional, a fact that sparked controversy during its construction. Some even said it resembled a bombed-out bunker!

But look closer. Hidden beneath the surface lies the “Labyrinth.” This ingenious passive cooling system, made of 1.2 kilometers of honeycombed concrete walls, keeps the Atrium comfortably cool in summer, using just a fraction of the energy of conventional air conditioning. Now, how’s that for smart design?

Federation Square is a testament to Melbourne’s ability to embrace the modern while honoring its past. It’s a place where stories are made and shared. So soak in the atmosphere, enjoy the events, and experience the heart of Melbourne here at Federation Square.
