Can you hear the music dancing on the wind? That’s the Federation Bells Installation, a symphony of sound and sculpture right here in Birrarung Marr. The Federation Bells Installation is a unique and captivating landmark. It’s a tribute to Australia’s federation, a centenary celebration that echoed through these very bells back in 2001. Now, picture this: 39 upturned bells, each with its own unique voice, reaching towards the sky. These aren’t just any bells. They were crafted by Anton Hasell and Neil McLachlan, their design a collaboration with Swaney Draper Architects. But the magic of the Federation Bells Installation isn’t just in their appearance. These bells are living instruments. They come alive several times a day, between 8 and 9 am, 12:30 and 1:30 pm, and again from 5 to 6 pm, filling the park with a symphony of sound. And you know what’s even more fascinating? You can actually compose music for these bells! There’s a website, Federation Bells.com.au, where aspiring composers can create their own melodies and submit them. If you’re lucky, you might even hear your composition echoing through the park. But the true magic of the Federation Bells Installation is best experienced in person. As you wander among these gleaming giants, let the music wash over you, each note a testament to Australia’s rich history and vibrant culture.
