From humble beginnings to a crucible of brilliance. That’s the story of the Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium. We stand before a building that has witnessed a remarkable transformation. The Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium started as a simple elementary school in 1911. Budapest’s mayor wanted to address the growing need for education in the expanding city. Just a year later, it became the temporary home of the Pedagogical Seminary. This institution aimed to guide and supervise teachers and schools across the city. The elementary school evolved into a training ground. Here, teachers learned the latest pedagogical techniques. Between the World Wars, the seminars held at the school gained immense popularity. Even renowned writer Zsigmond Móricz praised them in the literary journal Nyugat. The seeds of the high school were sown in 1923 with the establishment of St. Benedictus High School. This school, run by Benedictine monks, was located near the current site. After the Communist takeover, the school was nationalized. It continued its mission under the name we know today: Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium. In 1960, the school expanded its role. It became a training high school, extending the successful elementary school model to cover all 12 years of education. The high school then moved to the building we see now. The Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The building suffered severe damage during World War II and again during the 1956 revolution. Despite these setbacks, the school persevered. The Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium’s prestige truly blossomed in 1962. Imre Rábai started special mathematics classes. He gathered talented students who would go on to bring international acclaim to the school. Since then, numerous alumni have excelled, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. In 1966, the entire Hungarian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad was made up of Fazekas students. Three of them even returned with gold medals. This achievement cemented the Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium’s position as a top school in Hungary. This legacy continues to this day, with Fazekas students regularly representing Hungary in International Science Olympiad teams. The Fazekas Mihály Gyakorló Általános Iskola és Gimnázium stands as a testament to the power of education and the impact of dedicated teachers. From a simple elementary school, it has become a breeding ground for some of Hungary’s brightest minds.
