Hidden in plain sight, ‘favourite spot’ – Lord Byron whispers tales of poetic inspiration. It’s not grand or imposing. It’s a simple tomb in St Mary’s churchyard in Harrow-on-the-Hill. Yet, this unassuming spot held immense significance for the famed Romantic poet, Lord Byron. During his time at Harrow School, young Byron discovered this tranquil sanctuary. He would lie atop the tomb of John Peachey, gazing out at the sprawling greenery. The peaceful churchyard, with its stunning views, became his ‘favourite spot’, a place where nature’s beauty fueled his poetic spirit. He wrote of nature’s grandeur, inspired by the very earth beneath him. Even after leaving Harrow, Byron returned to St Mary’s for services, drawn back to this place of solace and inspiration. He even considered being buried here, a testament to the profound impact this simple spot had on his life. Though Byron’s final resting place is elsewhere, a poignant connection to St Mary’s remains. His daughter, Allegra, lies buried here. Her short life ended tragically in 1822. Byron, unwilling to leave her in Italy, had her body brought back to England. Due to the circumstances of her birth, Allegra was initially laid to rest in an unmarked grave near the church entrance. It wasn’t until 1980 that a memorial plaque, inscribed with Byron’s own words to Mary Shelley, finally marked her resting place. ‘favourite spot’ – Lord Byron. A place of inspiration, a place of peace, a place of enduring connection.
