Gazing across the serene waters of Puget Sound, can you envision a time before ferries dominated Fauntleroy’s shores? Fauntleroy, nestled in the southwest corner of Seattle, offers breathtaking views of Vashon Island and the Olympic Mountains. This tranquil neighborhood boasts a rich history, intertwined with Native American heritage and the dreams of early pioneers. Fauntleroy takes its name from the cove, christened by Lt. George Davidson in 1857 to honor his fiancée’s family. Before the influx of settlers, Native Americans cherished this land, utilizing Fauntleroy Cove for fishing and clamming. Evidence of their presence has been unearthed, revealing ancient burial grounds and shell middens. A “spirit boulder,” Psai-Yah-hus, still rests south of the ferry dock, a testament to the Native American belief in its power over landslides and earthquakes. In 1905, John Adams, an enterprising pioneer, acquired 300 acres in Fauntleroy, sparking its development. He envisioned a thriving community and championed the construction of a streetcar line connecting Fauntleroy to Seattle. The arrival of the streetcar, along with the construction of roads and a dock, transformed Fauntleroy. In 1908, the Fauntleroy Church was “built in a day,” a symbol of the community’s collaborative spirit. The Fauntleroy YMCA followed in 1914, further solidifying the neighborhood’s commitment to fostering a family-friendly environment. The Fauntleroy School, established in 1917, became another cornerstone of the community. Interestingly, older students would spend their lunch breaks fishing in Fauntleroy Creek. Today, Fauntleroy retains its tranquil charm while offering modern amenities. The Washington State Ferries terminal connects Fauntleroy to Vashon Island and Southworth, making it a gateway to island adventures. Fauntleroy’s story is one of community, resilience, and a deep appreciation for its natural beauty. From its Native American roots to its pioneering spirit, Fauntleroy has blossomed into a beloved Seattle neighborhood. As you stand here, soak in the serene atmosphere and appreciate the layers of history that have shaped this unique corner of the world.
