Do you see that modest yet graceful mosque before us? That is the Fatma Sultan Camii. Its story is intertwined with powerful women and turbulent times.

Let’s journey back to the 18th century, during the flamboyant Tulip Era. Sultan Ahmed III ruled the Ottoman Empire. His daughter, Fatma Sultan, was a remarkable woman. She was born in 1704 in Topkapı Palace. Her mother was Emetullah Kadın. Fatma was not just a princess. She was a force to be reckoned with.

At a tender age of five, Fatma was betrothed to Silahdar Ali Pasha. The wedding was a grand affair that lasted for days in Topkapı Palace. Silahdar Ali Pasha rose to become Grand Vizier. Sadly, he died in 1716, leaving Fatma a widow at twelve.

In 1717, Ahmed III arranged another marriage for Fatma. This time, her husband was Nevşehirli Ibrahim Pasha. He was a man much older than her own father. Despite the age gap, their marriage blossomed into a love story. Ibrahim Pasha was deeply devoted to Fatma. He showered her with attention and granted her every wish.

Fatma, in turn, was fiercely jealous and protective of her husband. She would often ask her father if Ibrahim was faithful. Their love story was also marked by grandeur. They acquired several palaces. They transformed one near the Topkapı Palace into a sprawling complex. Ibrahim Pasha even penned a poem expressing his love for Fatma.

But Fatma’s influence extended beyond her marriage. She wielded considerable political power. She influenced both her father and her husband. Some say she was the true ruler during the later Tulip Era. Fatma acted as an intermediary between foreign ambassadors and the Ottoman court. She favored the French and helped them secure favorable policies. She has been called the last truly influential princess of the Ottoman Empire.

The Tulip Era was a time of splendor and excess. Fatma and Ibrahim Pasha enjoyed a life of luxury. They had two sons and two daughters. This era came crashing down with the Patrona Halil revolt in 1730. Ibrahim Pasha was killed. Her father, Sultan Ahmed III, was deposed. Fatma’s world turned upside down.

After the revolt, Fatma’s wealth was seized. She was exiled to the Çırağan Palace. The new government feared she might try to restore her father to the throne. Fatma Sultan died in 1733 at the young age of twenty-eight. She was buried in the mausoleum of Turhan Sultan in New Mosque.

Fatma Sultan’s legacy lives on. In 1727, she commissioned a fountain near her palace. She also commissioned another fountain near the Cedid Valide Sultan Mosque in Üsküdar in 1728. Fatma also commissioned this mosque, now known as the Fatma Sultan Camii, in the Eminönü district. Her husband commissioned a palace nearby. Fatma Sultan repaired the mosque. She expanded it with land from her palace.

Though the original mosque dates back to 1571, it fell into disrepair. It was restored around 1971. Only the four walls remained.

As you stand before the Fatma Sultan Camii remember Fatma Sultan. She was a woman of influence, love, and ultimately, tragedy. Her story is etched in the stones of this mosque. It whispers through the centuries.
