A symphony of horns blares. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge stretches before you a steel giant spanning the Bosphorus.

This isn’t just any bridge. This is the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. It connects Europe and Asia. Named after the Ottoman Sultan who conquered Constantinople in 1453 its very existence is a testament to history and engineering.

Designed by Freeman Fox & Partners and BOTEK Bosphorus Technical Consulting Corp the bridge took years to construct. An international team including Japanese Italian and Turkish companies worked tirelessly. Construction began on March 29 1985 and concluded on May 29 1988. Prime Minister Turgut Ozal himself drove across it on opening day July 3 1988. That made him the first person to cross the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.

It’s a gravity-anchored suspension bridge. Steel pylons rise majestically. The aerodynamic deck hangs from double vertical steel cables. It’s 1510 meters long with a 39 meter wide deck. The main span between the towers is 1090 meters a considerable distance. The bridge stands 105 meters tall above the road. Sixty-four meters separate the deck from the sea below.

Initially it was the fifth longest suspension bridge span worldwide. Now it ranks much lower. But it remains iconic. Each day around 150000 vehicles cross. Most are cars. Pedestrians are not allowed though. The bridge facilitates the flow of traffic on the Trans-European Motorway. Lane allocation changes throughout the day depending on peak traffic hours.

Even now the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge remains a significant toll bridge. The system is now cashless using HGS. The fee varies based on the vehicle.

Stand here and feel the pulse of Istanbul. Hear the rumble of traffic. See the ships sail beneath this modern marvel that connects two continents. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge is not just concrete and steel. It’s a symbol of connection progress and history. A bridge in more ways than one.
