Beneath this very ground slumbers a tale of transformation. I am talking about Fatih Camii. This is not just a mosque but a testament to Istanbul’s ever-changing story.

Fatih Camii stands in the Fatih district. “Fatih” means “Conqueror” in Turkish. The mosque is named after Mehmed the Conqueror. He seized Constantinople in 1453.

The original Fatih Mosque was built between 1463 and 1470. It replaced the Church of the Holy Apostles. This church was in disrepair after the Fourth Crusade. The church was also the burial place of Roman emperors like Constantine the Great.

Mehmed II wanted to create an Islamic monument grander than the Hagia Sophia. Legend says the architect’s hands were cut off when the mosque wasn’t as high as the church. It was built on a hill. The architect of the original Fatih Camii was Atik Sinan.

The Fatih Mosque became the first monumental project showing Ottoman imperial architecture. The complex was vast. It had eight medreses. These are schools. There was also a library, a hospital, and a dervish inn. A caravanserai, a market, a hamam, and a public kitchen completed the complex.

Earthquakes severely damaged the first mosque. It was repaired but another earthquake destroyed it in 1766. Sultan Mustafa III ordered a rebuild. This new mosque was completed in 1771. Mehmet Tahir Agha was the architect. The design was completely different.

Today’s Fatih Camii has one central dome. It is supported by four semi-domes. Only the courtyard, main entrance, and lower minarets remain from the original mosque. The interior resembles Sinan’s earlier designs. The central dome is 26 meters in diameter. It rests on four large marble columns. The calligraphy shows Baroque influence.

The Fatih Mosque was more than a religious place. It was a kulliye. This is a complex meeting religious and cultural needs. The Sahn-ı Seman medreses were north and south of the mosque. They housed many students. The dervish inn has a courtyard with columns from the Church of the Holy Apostles.

The graveyard holds tombs of Sultan Mehmed II and his consort Gülbahar Hatun. New sultans visited Mehmed II’s tomb after their Sword of Osman investiture. Halil İnalcık, a renowned Ottoman scholar, was buried here in 2016.

The Carullah Efendi Library connects to the mosque. It was built in 1724. Its books are now protected in the Suleymaniye Library. The caravanserai was restored in the 1980s. It now functions as shops. The original hospital, market, kitchens, and hamam are gone.

Some say the mosque reflects Islamic Persian medresse architecture. It is not just a copy of Byzantine church design.

Every Wednesday, a busy street market surrounds the Fatih Camii. The mosque is a bustling center of worship. It reminds us of Istanbul’s rich history and cultural blend.
