“Fate,” Lafayette Brown’s nickname given by his wife echoes through time. This is Fate, Texas. Not just a name but a story etched in the land itself.

Fate began as a humble settlement. It gained a post office in July 1880. By the mid-1880s Fate had a school and a cotton gin. Two general stores served a population of seventy-five.

But Fate almost vanished. In 1886 Dr. Wylie T. Barnes platted a new community. It was on his land half a mile northeast. He called it Barnes City. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad arrived. Residents and businesses moved to Barnes City.

To keep the post office Barnes City became Fate. It happened in February 1887. By 1890 the community thrived. Fifteen businesses operated here. There was also a two-room school and two churches for a population of 100.

In 1899 Fate achieved a special distinction. It launched the first rural mail route in Texas. The town grew steadily. By 1920 the population reached 299. Fate’s first bank opened in 1907. The town incorporated in 1908.

The federal highway arrived after World War I. Yet the 1920s and 1930s brought decline. Agriculture was still key but better roads drew trade away. A bank and stores remained. Fate’s school dropped its high school grades. The population fell to 127 by 1940.

Businesses and residents left for Dallas and Fort Worth. The number of businesses dropped from fifteen to six in the 1940s. But Fate began to rebound after 1950. By 1990 the population was 475. Many residents worked in Dallas. In 2000 the population reached 497.

The city of Fate is one of the fastest-growing communities in all of DFW. From a population of just over 600 in the year 2000, Fate’s population was estimated to be over 12000 as of January 1, 2017.

Fate has seen its share of trials. Fires ravaged the business district in 1906 and 1910. A tornado devastated Fate in 1933. The community persevered.

Fate’s story is one of resilience. It is a story of growth and change. From its humble beginnings to its modern expansion Fate remains a vibrant community. It is a place where history and progress intertwine shaping the destiny of its residents. In 2022, Fate’s population was 23000.
