Has anyone ever wondered how many secrets a solitary island can hold? Here on Isla El Cardón, a hulking mass of rock facing the Pacific, the stories are etched deep into the stone. Isla El Cardón stands as a natural shield for Corinto Island, formed over centuries by the tireless work of tides. The island itself has been shaped by millennia, resisting the constant push and pull of the Pacific. This isn’t just any island. Isla El Cardón is a monument to eternity, a testament to the enduring power of nature. Early in the 20th century, the current lighthouse, Faro Isla El Cardón, was built on its rocky peak. A sturdy structure of sand, lime, and cement, it stands defiant against the relentless wind and sea. Originally, its acetylene light shone brightly, a beacon visible for fourteen nautical miles. During World War II, the US Navy, stationed at the Corinto Naval Air Base, occupied Isla El Cardón. They built small wooden structures and, as a wartime strategy, extinguished the lighthouse’s beam. They also established the island’s second underwater telephone connection and the first underwater telegraph link to Corinto. This vital communication line was later severed and unfortunately, never repaired. The negligence allowed someone to enter the unmanned lighthouse and steal the vital gas tube, diminishing the light’s reach to a mere three or four nautical miles, creating a persistent hazard for approaching ships. The island also has a quieter history. A thin layer of sweet soil, a mix of sea salt and sand rinsed clean by centuries of rain, supports a fragile ecosystem of small shrubs and thick undergrowth, constantly battling the harsh summer sun and reviving with the winter rains. For generations, Isla El Cardón was a place of solitude. Its only visitors were seabirds seeking rest and nesting grounds, their calls echoing against the rhythmic crash of waves. Imagine the pelicans, gulls, petrels, ospreys, and the occasional wandering albatross finding refuge on this isolated rock. The first recorded human presence on Isla El Cardón was the arrival of Gabriel de Rojas and his men in 1533. The island even witnessed the birth of Francisco Palma Martínez in 1891, a respected scholar and writer often mistaken for someone from León, but a true native of Isla El Cardón. A darker tale whispers of a crime committed at the island’s well, a tragic story of jealousy or betrayal, where a wife met her untimely end in the dark depths. Today, Isla El Cardón draws visitors seeking respite from the mainland. They come to bask in the natural beauty, to swim in the ocean, and perhaps, to feel the echoes of centuries past. Today, only the lighthouse keeper and their family remain as permanent residents of this island, guardians of its many stories. Faro Isla El Cardón, more than a lighthouse, is a silent keeper of secrets, its history intertwined with the rhythms of the sea and the resilience of the human spirit.
