“A lighthouse standing almost in the water? Now that’s something you don’t see every day.” The Faro del Toston, perched dramatically on the edge of Fuerteventura’s coastline, is a sight to behold. The Faro del Toston has been guiding sailors through the treacherous Bocaina Strait since the late 19th century. Its history is as captivating as the rugged landscape surrounding it. The first lighthouse, built in 1897, was a modest affair, a mere 6.5 meters high. Its dim white light barely pierced the darkness, proving inadequate for the task. In 1923, a brighter flashing light replaced the original, but the lighthouse still struggled to be seen. The need for a more visible beacon led to the construction of a taller, 13.25-meter tower in 1955. Even with this improvement, the Faro del Toston continued to be a source of anxiety for mariners navigating the strait. Finally, in 1986, the current 37-meter tower was erected, its powerful, intermittent white beam reaching out 14 nautical miles. Today, the Faro del Toston stands as a testament to the evolution of maritime safety. This beacon, powered by the sun, offers a sense of security to those who sail these waters. It serves as a powerful reminder of the island’s rich maritime heritage.
