A salty breeze whispers secrets of the sea. We stand before the Faro de Punta Martiño a sentinel against the Atlantic’s relentless surge.

The Faro de Punta Martiño is more than just a lighthouse. It’s a silent witness to centuries of maritime history. Built in 1865 it stands proudly on Lobos Island near Fuerteventura. Its construction a testament to the ingenuity of 19th-century builders. They used dark volcanic rock and basalto creating a structure that seems to emerge from the very heart of the island. The six-meter-high tower is a masterpiece of simple elegance.

Imagine the lives of the lighthouse keepers. They lived in a small yellow house attached to the tower. Their daily lives a rhythm of tending the lamp and keeping watch over the sea. Originally fueled by olive oil the light’s reach was limited to 9 nautical miles. Over the years though the lamp was updated. First to paraffin then acetylene. Finally in the 1960s electricity arrived making the lighthouse automatic. Antoñito el Farero the last keeper and his family were the last permanent residents of Lobos Island. His stories of seafaring tales and hearty fish stews still linger in the island’s air.

The Faro de Punta Martiño wasn’t just a navigational aid. It was also a beacon of hope. It served as a guiding light for ships navigating the Bocayna Strait the treacherous waters separating Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The lighthouse’s light along with those at Pechiguera and Tostón marked the safe passage for countless vessels.

Today solar panels power a 150-watt halogen lamp. Its beam cuts through the night reaching 14 nautical miles. The light itself flashes twice every 15 seconds a rhythmic pulse echoing the island’s heartbeat. The Faro de Punta Martiño continues to guide ships to safety a testament to its enduring legacy. Though the building itself is closed to the public the view from the surrounding area is breathtaking.

Walk the marked 3.5 km path from the ferry landing to reach this place. Take in the beauty of the Faro de Punta Martiño. Absorb its history. Feel the sea spray on your face. Let the lighthouse’s story become a part of your own. The Faro de Punta Martiño more than just a structure it is a symbol of resilience a tale etched in stone and light.
