Farmers Branch, a name that whispers of simpler times, is a town steeped in history. Right here, where the hustle and bustle of Dallas meet the quiet tranquility of the suburbs, a tale unfolds.

The story of Farmers Branch begins in 1842 with the arrival of three settlers, Thomas Keenan, Isaac B. Webb, and William Cochran. They received land grants in this area, which would later become the very heart of Farmers Branch. They called their settlement “Mustang Branch,” a name inspired by the wild mustang grapes that flourished along the creek. But Cochran, with a keen eye for its potential, changed the name to Farmers Branch, reflecting the rich farmland that surrounded it.

Farmers Branch quickly established itself as a vital hub for early Dallas County. The first formal church in the county, Webb’s Chapel, was founded here in 1845. It stood as a beacon of faith, a place of community, and a testament to the deep roots that the settlers put down in this land. In 1846, a school was started in the church, nurturing the minds of the next generation of Farmers Branch pioneers. This was followed by the establishment of the first post office in Farmers Branch in 1848.

But Farmers Branch was more than just a place of worship and education. It was also a center of innovation. In 1845, William Bowles, a Baptist preacher, and his slave, Jordan, built the first blacksmith shop in Dallas County. The same year saw the construction of the first gristmill in the county, although its ingenuity was limited – its rawhide belts could only be used in dry weather because they stretched when wet. The first cotton gin in the area followed in 1849, a testament to the growing agricultural importance of the area.
