Farmasi Arena. A name synonymous with electrifying performances and sporting triumphs. Here we stand before this impressive structure, a testament to Rio’s vibrant spirit. Originally known as Arena Olímpica do Rio, this venue has witnessed moments of pure athleticism and artistic brilliance. The Farmasi Arena opened its doors in 2007, just in time for the Pan American Games. It was constructed within the Nelson Piquet International Autodrome as part of the City of Sports Complex.
The Farmasi Arena wasn’t just a venue for the Pan American Games. It also hosted events during the Rio+20 Earth Summit. This shows its versatility. The arena boasts a multifunctional structure, inspired by NBA arenas. It can hold up to 18,000 people for concerts and around 15,000 for sporting events. The arena’s design incorporates retractable seating and a floating floor, allowing it to adapt to a range of events. It has even hosted graduations and corporate functions.
This arena also holds a special distinction in Olympic history. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, it became the first arena ever to host all three gymnastics disciplines: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline. Beyond the Olympics, the Farmasi Arena has hosted a multitude of events. From UFC fights to basketball games, including an NBA exhibition game between the Washington Wizards and the Chicago Bulls, the arena has seen it all. It’s home to Flamengo Basketball and has been the stage for several Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) championships.
And who could forget the music? The Farmasi Arena has resonated with the sounds of international superstars like Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Paul McCartney, and Harry Styles, as well as Brazilian icons like Roberto Carlos and Ivete Sangalo. The first concert ever held here was Roberto Carlos’s traditional New Year’s Eve show for TV Globo in 2007. Since then, the stage has seen everything from rock legends like Iron Maiden to pop sensations like Miley Cyrus. Even eSports events like the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational and the IEM Rio Major have found a home within these walls. The arena’s impressive acoustics even earned it the Caio Award for Best Acoustics in Latin America.
Today, Farmasi Arena stands as a symbol of Rio’s commitment to both athletic excellence and entertainment. It’s a place where memories are made, whether through a gravity-defying gymnastic routine, a knockout punch, or a soaring musical performance. So, as you gaze at this magnificent structure, remember the echoes of applause, the roar of the crowd, and the magic that has unfolded within the Farmasi Arena.
