Consider the kauri tree fossil forest around the shoreline. It formed after a volcanic eruption about 26000 years ago. Welcome to Farm Cove. This suburb sits in East Auckland. It is part of the Howick ward. Farm Cove offers a blend of history, recreation, and natural beauty.

Let’s start with its past. For its first 100 years, Farm Cove was a rural part of Pakuranga. In 1843 Joseph Hargreaves purchased 83 acres. He built his home Butley near where Farm Cove Intermediate stands today. More settlers came after 1847. Howick became a defensive outpost. Retired British Army soldiers called fencibles settled here with their families. A ferry ran between Bramley Drive Reserve Beach and Point England. It carried people across the Tāmaki River from 1847 to 1865. The Gill dairy farm was established. It supplied Auckland city with milk in the 19th century.

Fletcher Construction developed Farm Cove in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The suburb got its name from Joseph Hargreaves’ farm house. Sadly it was demolished in 1972. The Pakuranga Junior Sailing Club moved here in 1971. It came from Pakuranga. The Farm Cove Shopping Centre opened in 1973. In 1999 Fred Goodfellow established Farm Cove Observatory.

Farm Cove covers 0.84 square kilometers. As of June 2024 its population was about 2230. That is a density of 2655 people per square kilometer. Farm Cove is located on the Tāmaki River’s eastern shores. Wakaaranga Creek forms the northern border with Half Moon Bay.

The Rotary Walkway Reserve runs through Farm Cove. Farm Cove is a great spot for picnics with family and friends. You can play ball sports on the grass reserve. You can also play on the beach at low tide. Children will love playing in Snakes and Ladders Park. The beach at Farm Cove is good for swimming. But it is not patrolled by surf lifeguards. There may be currents. Keep young children close. Be aware of yachts and other vessels.

Farm Cove Intermediate is a school for years 7 and 8. It was established in 1980. Wakaaranga School is a primary school for years 1 to 6. It opened in 1976. Its name means “The resting place of the canoe”. The schools are next to each other. There is also a kindergarten behind Wakaaranga Primary School.
