Unveiling itself in 1982, Far East Plaza stands tall on Scotts Road. This shopping center is in the heart of Orchard Road. Far East Plaza quickly became an icon. It represented youth culture in Singapore from the 1980s to the 2000s.

Did you know that Far East Plaza once housed over 600 shops? It attracted a young student crowd. They came for inexpensive clothing outlets and eateries. One popular store was 77th Street. It was a go-to for trendy clothes.

Far East Plaza also became known for its tattoo parlors and barbers. These were often found on the upper floors. It was a place where young people could express themselves. It was a hub of youthful energy.

In 1983, Metro, a major department store, opened in Far East Plaza. It became a main anchor. However, Metro closed its store in 2002. This marked a shift for the mall.

Far East Plaza broke records in 1981. All 114 shops were snapped up in just two hours. This showed how desirable it was. It also became famous for the Far East Kids. These youths sported colorful outfits and punk-like hairstyles. They added to the mall’s unique vibe.

However, times changed. New youth-oriented shopping malls emerged. These included Scape, The Heeren, and Cathay Cineleisure. Blogshops also became popular. As a result, fewer young people visited Far East Plaza. By 2016, business had declined by half compared to a decade earlier.

With declining occupancy rates, landlords started accepting more massage parlors. This changed the character of Far East Plaza. It reflected the evolving retail landscape in Singapore.

Far East Plaza is a strata-titled mall. It also houses Far East Plaza Residences. These serviced apartments consist of 139 units of various sizes. This adds a residential element to the shopping center.

Far East Plaza was developed by Far East Organization. Ng Teng Fong, known as the “King of Orchard Road”, headed the organization. He was a major developer of hotels and shopping centers in Orchard Road.

Far East Plaza featured Singapore’s first computerized musical fountain. It was a modern attraction. It drew even more visitors.

Despite changes over the years, Far East Plaza remains a landmark. It holds a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans. It reminds us of a time when youth culture thrived within its walls. Its history is rich with stories of fashion, music, and self-expression.

Today, Far East Plaza continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of shoppers and businesses. While it may not be the same as it was in its heyday, it still offers a unique shopping experience. It is a place where you can find hidden gems. It is a place where you can discover local talents.

As you explore Far East Plaza, remember its past. Think about the youths who once roamed its corridors. Appreciate the independent retailers who shaped its culture. Far East Plaza is more than just a shopping center. It is a living testament to Singapore’s ever-changing urban landscape.
