Behold Fang Bolden. It is more than just stoneware. It’s a story etched in clay.

Fang Bolden was created by Jørgen Hansen in 1997. It was erected in 2011 near Selsmosevej. This location is west of Taastrup Stationscenter.

Originally, Fang Bolden stood proudly on Kjeld Abells Plads. This was in front of Taastrup Teater. An expansion of the theater led to its relocation. Now Fang Bolden enjoys a prominent spot near the station. Its dynamic form resonates with the bustling surroundings.

The Fang Bolden sculpture group consists of three columns. Each stands two and a half meters tall. They have a diameter of 80 cm. The entire artwork weighs six tons.

These pillars were fired at Tommerup Teglværk on Funen. Jørgen Hansen says the idea evolved during a show in Aarhus. He sought inspiration from the heavens. He aimed to embrace the divine.

Hansen connected this inspiration to Taastrup Teater’s theme “Livet på spil”. This translates to “Life at Stake”. He saw both seriousness and playfulness. The work also captures the randomness of free play. His thoughts drifted to small plastic toys. These toys have a button. Pressing it makes a ball jump. It then catches it again. Thus, the title “Fang Bolden” meaning Catch the Ball was born.

Jørgen Hansen’s artistic journey includes studies in France, England, and Canada from 1965 to 1972. Afterward, he established his own workshop. He has taught at numerous art schools. His works include “Glødende søjler” in Kolding. Others are “The Currach Man” in Ireland and “Sjælens katedral” in Aarhus. You can also view “After the Cowboys” in Tasmania. “Marens hægte” is at Tønder museum. Two of his pots reside in Hedehuset.

To be quick is an advantage. You can spot Fang Bolden from the train. This is when traveling past Taastrup Station. Fang Bolden’s movement and weight give response to the busy reality there.

The municipality published a book titled “Ler og ild” for the artwork. The book featured text by Bjarke Regn Svensen. “Ler og ild” translates to “Clay and Fire.”

Fang Bolden stands as a testament. It shows artistic vision that blends chance and inspiration. Next time you pass by, remember it. “Fang Bolden, hvis livet skal leves.” This translates to “Catch the ball, if life is to be lived”.
