Was there ever a building more shrouded in controversy than the Fandiyaaru Mosque? The Fandiyaaru Mosque, once a beacon of Malé’s skyline, was much more than just a place of worship. It was a living testament to the ebb and flow of history itself. Built in 1747 by Al Qadi Muhammad Muhibbuddin Fandiyaaru Kaleyfaanu, the Chief Justice of the time, it was later named in his honor. Imagine the stories those coral stone walls could tell, if only they could speak. The Fandiyaaru Mosque bore witness to over two centuries of Maldivian life, its very existence intertwined with the story of the nation. But sadly, in 2014, despite public outcry and pleas from historians, the Fandiyaaru Mosque was demolished. A modern four-storey mosque now stands in its place. The old mosque may be gone, but its story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving our shared history and the delicate balance between progress and heritage.
