Falchera. A neighborhood shrouded in history, standing as a testament to Turin’s post-war resilience. What you see before you is Falchera, a neighborhood born from the ashes of World War II. Falchera was designed by architect Giovanni Astengo. It emerged between 1952 and 1954 as a beacon of hope for workers seeking housing. The name “Falchera” itself is a nod to the past, drawn from the area’s original name, “Flachera Vecchia.” Falchera Vecchia, the heart of this neighborhood, stands as a time capsule of 1950s urban planning. Picture rows of three-story apartment buildings, their red brick facades echoing the industrial spirit of the era. These buildings, with their three or four wings, embrace expansive green spaces, a testament to Astengo’s vision of a harmonious community. At the core of Falchera Vecchia lies Piazza Giovanni Astengo, originally Piazza Falchera until 2007. This central square is more than just a gathering place. It reflects the soul of Falchera. On its eastern side stands the Parish of St. Pius X, its presence felt through the adjoining oratorio, inaugurated in 1957. The oratorio, a hub of community life, stands as a symbol of faith and resilience. As you wander through Falchera, notice the street names. Inspired by the beauty of nature, they paint a poetic picture amidst the urban landscape, a reminder of life’s simple joys. The story of Falchera, however, doesn’t end there. In the 1970s, as Turin’s population surged, a new chapter unfolded: Falchera Nuova. This expansion, while echoing the spirit of its predecessor, adopted a distinct architectural style. Four-story terraced buildings and ten-story tower blocks, painted in bold reds and whites, marked a departure from Falchera Vecchia’s aesthetic. Falchera stands today as a testament to Turin’s ability to rise from adversity, a symbol of hope, resilience, and community spirit.
