“A Kossuth-díjas művész élete” whispers the marble plaque before us. The Fajó János emlék tabletta in Budapest’s 14th district stands as a testament to a life dedicated to art. Born on February 9 1937 Fajó János was a Hungarian painter. His artistic journey was deeply influenced by Lajos Kassák’s intellectual legacy. He embraced constructivism. His works reflect the optimism of his spirit. He incorporated elements of op-art and minimal art. He was also part of the “new geometry” movement.

Fajó János graduated from the Hungarian College of Applied Arts. He studied between 1956 and 1961. His teachers included Pál Miháltz Zsolt Gács György and Lajos Szentiványi. He taught there for a year and a half afterwards. He traveled extensively. He visited the Soviet Union Egypt Vienna Basel Paris London and Nuremberg.

In 1974 he co-founded the Pesti Műhely. He was its sole inheritor from 1982 onward. From 1976 to 1988 he directed the Józsefvárosi Gallery. He held an exhibition in the Műcsarnok in 1990. He designed the graphics for the Gyorsuló Idő book series. His works are in prominent Hungarian museums. They are also in museums in Austria Germany Switzerland Italy Slovakia and Poland.

His style evolved. It moved from geometric traditions towards constructivism. He reduced natural forms to basic geometric shapes. He emphasized sensitivity in his works. He worked with Bak Imre. Together they defined the progressive art program of their group. The Józsefvárosi Gallery that Fajó led for over a decade provided exhibition space for the Pesti Műhely artists. The group included Bak Fajó István Nádlér Ilona Keserű and András Mengyán.

Fajó’s sculptures echoed his painting. His three-dimensional works used circles squares and triangles. He experimented. He began with folded paper cuttings. Later he chose materials and techniques based on his artistic concepts. He was a founding member of the Győr metal sculpture colony and symposium.

This plaque serves as a subtle reminder. It tells of a legacy of artistic innovation. It honors Fajó’s contributions to Hungarian art. It speaks of his commitment to modernism. It reminds us of his enduring influence. The inscription is simple. Yet it is a powerful testament. This is more than just a memorial. It is a symbol of a vibrant life. A life lived in pursuit of beauty. A life that inspired a generation of artists.
