In the heart of Washington D.C., Faith United Church of Christ stands as a testament to community and resilience. Faith United Church of Christ began its journey in 1951 as Faith Evangelical and Reformed Church. Its initial purpose was to provide spiritual guidance to the children of the General Protestant Orphan Home, later known as Beech Acres Orphanage. The congregation first gathered in the orphanage’s administration building auditorium. This shared space fostered a strong sense of community between the church and the orphanage. In 1954, the Faith United Church of Christ community rejoiced as their own church building was completed. This new space, now the sanctuary, became a hub of activity. It served not only as a place of worship but also as an educational center and a Fellowship Hall. As Faith United Church of Christ grew, so did its physical footprint. A Fellowship Hall, a kitchen, and Sunday school rooms were added to accommodate the expanding congregation and its needs. A significant moment in the church’s history came in 1957 with the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Church. This union gave birth to the United Church of Christ denomination. Faith United Church of Christ embraced this change, carrying forward its legacy of service and welcome. Although the ties with Beech Acres Orphanage are no longer institutional, the church continues to be a welcoming place for children and all those seeking a spiritual home. The United Church of Christ, of which Faith United Church of Christ is a part, is known for its commitment to social justice and inclusivity. It prides itself on being a “church of firsts.” Throughout its history, the UCC has been a pioneering force in areas such as racial equality and LGBTQ+ rights. This progressive spirit is reflected in Faith United Church of Christ’s ongoing commitment to serving its community and embracing diversity.
