A majestic pipe organ. That’s what first drew me to Faith Lutheran Church. Its rich history unfolded before my eyes. This isn’t just any church. It’s a vibrant community built on the foundations of two congregations. Advent Lutheran Church and Messiah Lutheran Church. They joined forces in 1984. They created the Faith we see today. Their shared journey is a testament to unity and faith.
Faith Lutheran Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Austin’s religious heritage. Established much earlier in 1950. It’s one of eight churches in the Brentwood and Crestview neighborhoods. Faith’s story began with door-to-door canvassing in 1976. Forty families became charter members. They held their first Christmas service at Living History Farms. Imagine early services at Valley III Theater in Valley West Mall. Sunday school in the mall atrium.
The church’s growth was remarkable. It moved to a new building in 1977. This space is now part of the current church building. A major construction project in 2009 added two stories. It created much-needed space for children and youth programs. It honors the church’s early history. Advent Hall and Messiah Hall stand as a reminder of their roots.
Faith Lutheran Church’s pipe organ is truly something special. A 34-rank organ with 1896 pipes. It was moved from Illinois to Austin in 1969. Master organ builder Otto Hofmann and dedicated members restored it. Hofmann a son of German immigrants was a remarkable man. He even had a small role in the film Waking Life. His wife Margret was a prominent Austin figure. Known as Austin’s Tree Lady. A peace activist and a member of the city council.
The church celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2010. There was a special service and rededication of the refurbished pipe organ. A multimedia presentation featured the music of Bach. The church also holds a stunning stained-glass Rose Window. Faith Lutheran Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a community hub a landmark. A place where history music and faith intertwine. A place that continues to grow and serve its community. A place worth remembering.
