Was it possible for a church to grow from just over a hundred members to over four thousand? At Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, it’s a testament to faith and community. Located in the heart of Minneapolis, Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church has a rich history. It all began in 1955 when a seminary student, Harold Tollefson, was sent to gauge the local interest in establishing a new Lutheran congregation. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and in March of that same year, the first service was held in an unlikely setting: a vacant store. By July, membership had swelled to 117, and by year’s end, it had reached an impressive 169 souls. Today, Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church boasts over four thousand baptized members, with nearly eleven thousand individuals having been part of its journey at some point. Initially known as a Lutheran Free Church, it merged into the American Lutheran Church in 1961 and later became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988. Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church stands as a beacon of faith and resilience, a testament to the power of community and the enduring strength of religious tradition.
