Over 170 years of faith. That’s the legacy whispered by the stones of Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church. Right here before you stands a testament to enduring community. More than just a building it’s a living history book.

Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church wasn’t always here on this Minneapolis corner. Its story began in 1852 as the German Methodist Church. The congregation first met in a tiny 24 by 36 foot building in St Paul. They called it Zion’s Church. This humble beginning contrasts sharply with the church’s eventual growth.

Growth necessitated moves. By 1859 a larger building was needed. The congregation built the Rosabel Church a two-story brick structure complete with a towering steeple a St Paul landmark. The church wasn’t just about services. Its members actively served their community. They fed the poor housed Civil War veterans and formed a temperance society. They even ran a day school.

But downtown St Paul expanded. The church’s land was condemned. The congregation relocated again in 1891 to a building designed by Cass Gilbert. He’d later become famous for designing the Minnesota State Capitol and the US Supreme Court building. This Van Slyke Court Church reflected the congregation’s thriving spirit and extensive charitable work. However even this remarkable building couldn’t escape the city’s growth. In 1916 the Northern Pacific Railroad bought the land for a staggering $55000.

This brought the congregation to its current location. A new church was built on Fairmount Avenue. Services began there in 1917. An Education Wing followed in 1957. Then an elevator was added in 1989 to improve accessibility. The church’s dedication to community continued even further. In 2007 Cleveland Avenue Methodist Church merged with Fairmount. Cleveland Avenue had served Minneapolis since 1924. This merger extended Fairmount’s reach and commitment to its neighbors.

So as you stand before Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church remember the generations of faith service and community. The building’s history echoes through its walls a powerful reminder of resilience and enduring spirit. The church lives on a testament to the power of faith and community over 170 years strong.
