A whisper of history. That’s what I felt standing before Fairfield Halls.
Fairfield Halls isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule. A vibrant testament to Croydon’s rich cultural heritage. Built on the site of Croydon’s historic Fair Field it opened its doors in 1962. This was a place where centuries of fairs had drawn crowds. Imagine farmers and traders bustling across the very ground beneath our feet.
The land had a past. Before Fairfield Halls there was a car park. Then air raid shelters. A far cry from the glamour that followed. The opening concert in 1962 featured the legendary Yehudi Menuhin. This set the stage for decades of incredible performances.
Think of the Beatles. Pink Floyd. David Bowie. Elton John. All graced this stage. These legendary artists left their mark on Fairfield Halls. The energy of their music still echoes here. Even lesser-known artists found their stage here. Local schools held annual concerts. Amateur dramatic groups performed. The halls throbbed with the heartbeats of Croydon.
The halls weren’t just for music. They hosted wrestling matches too. The stage was even lowered for these events. Extra seating went around the wrestling ring. Imagine the roar of the crowd. The tension of the matches. A completely different atmosphere filling the same space.
Fairfield Halls’ concert hall even has a big cinema screen. Croydon’s largest one. This building hosted a mass vaccination centre during the COVID-19 pandemic. From rock concerts to vaccinations a truly versatile space.
Then came the 30 million pound redevelopment. A long and sometimes bumpy road. Yet it reopened its doors in 2019. Sadly the pandemic brought temporary closure again. Now it stands ready for its next chapter.
But Fairfield Halls is more than just a venue. It is a living archive. Two thousand digital images document its history. It’s a treasure trove of memories. A reflection of Croydon’s spirit its energy and its resilience. As we stand here today we are witnessing a continuation of this story. A story waiting to be written. What will be the next chapter for Fairfield Halls?
