A century of faith echoes here. Right here stands Fair Meadows Community Church. But this unassuming building holds a powerful story. A story of resilience community and unwavering spirit. It’s a story rooted in the legacy of Chicago’s Metropolitan Community Church.
Metropolitan Community Church began in 1920. Members of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church formed a new congregation. They were upset about their pastor’s unexpected transfer. Their first services were held at Unity Hall. Over 500 people joined that first day. They chose the name The People’s Church and Metropolitan Community Center.
Their rapid growth led to the purchase of a magnificent building. This building was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It was a stunning example of 19th-century church architecture. The church even boasted a huge Skinner organ. This remarkable building became the heart of the community. It hosted countless gatherings. It was a place for political rallies. It provided space for meetings of labor unions. It was even the site of famous musical performances. Notable figures like W.E.B. DuBois Ida B. Wells and Mahalia Jackson graced its stage.
However in 2001 the church faced a crisis. The pastor announced plans to demolish the historic building. This action threatened to erase a vital part of Chicago’s history. The community rallied. The Coalition to Save the ‘Met’ was formed. They fought tirelessly to preserve this architectural and historical treasure. They organized letter-writing campaigns and protests. They worked with the media. They successfully secured a temporary restraining order. Their unwavering dedication saved the church. The Coalition to Save the ‘Met’ also played a key role in documenting the church’s history. They preserved its archives for future generations.
Fair Meadows Community Church carries on this legacy of faith and community. It’s more than a place of worship. It’s a living testament to resilience history and the power of collective action. As you stand here you are standing in a place steeped in history. A place where faith and perseverance triumphed. A place that continues to serve as a beacon of hope and community. Let us honor its past and embrace its future.
