The Facultad de Ciencias Sociales is part of the Universidad de la República. It is located in Montevideo’s Cordón neighborhood. The main building stands at Constituyente 1502. This location is a historic landmark.
Established in 1989, the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales began operating in 1991. Before this, social science studies were scattered across the university. The goal was to create a space for interdisciplinary studies. The Facultad de Ciencias Sociales aimed to foster research and teaching.
Look at the building itself. It was originally the Barraca de Emilio Fontán. Architect Julio Vilamajó designed it. Later, Bernardo Carriquiry adapted it for educational use. The building now houses classrooms, a library, and offices across nine floors.
In 2012, the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales had 5061 enrolled students. These students pursued various degrees. These included Political Science, Sociology, and Social Work. The Facultad de Ciencias Sociales also offers degrees in Development and Social Sciences.

The Facultad de Ciencias Sociales has had several deans. Dr. Luis Bértola served from 2002 to 2006. Prof. Diego Piñeiro had two terms. Susana Mallo Reynal was dean from 2011 to 2014. Currently, Dra. Carmen Midaglia leads the faculty since 2018.
